What do I need to build a web site?
1. A computerrunning Microsoft Windows, Apple OS Xor Linux. 2. An internet connection, preferably Broadband. 3. An internet "name"; this can be your name ("www.JohnSmith.com") or any special topic that you are interested in ("www.HarryPotterAdventures.com"). 4. A tool to create your web pages - you can use MS Word to do this... 5. A place ("web server") on the internet to store ("host") your web pages. 6. Finally, some promotion to let people know about your web site.
Any of the internet services advertised is fine - broadband is faster, but dial-up is OK too.
Step 3: An internet "name"
You can get an internet domain name (or "URL") from GoDaddy for as little as $0.99. We can't recommend GoDaddy for web hosting (see below) as they have a non-standard user interface. Or get the name you want at TDNam, Afternic or eBay. As soon as you have an internet domain name, you can start making money - even before you start working on your web site! Getting the domain name gives you ownership of the name ("URL") for your site; no one else has access to this name, as long as you pay the annual renewal fees. Additional to having the domain name, you also need to create the content of your site and get a "web server" to hold your site (and maybe handle E-mail to the domain).
Step 4: A tool to create your web pages
Most web hosting (see below) comes with free on-line web page creation tools. So all you need to create your web page is your internet browser! You can also use MS Word to create simple pages: after you have created your page, do "File -> Save as Web Page..." Of course, there are more sophisticated tools such as DreamWeaver or Microsoft FrontPage (now called "Expression Web"). Learn how to design your web site so it is easily found by people searching with Google or other search engines. Here is a hot guide to building profitable web sites - fast! or have your income-earning web site built for less than $100!!!
Step 5: An internet "host"
The "host" is where your web site is stored on the web - you can't do this yourself, unless you run and maintain special software on your PC. Despite the unusual name, HostGator offers excellent web hostingfor only $3.95 per month - Hurry: coupon "SPRING" for 20% off!!! If you want to have two or more web sites, the total cost is only $7.95/month! After you sign up with Hostgator, they will give you easy instructions how to load your web pages to their server.
Step 6. Publish and promote your web site:
After you publish your web site to the web, you need to make the internet world aware of it. You should promote it to the major web directories and search engines. Advertise your Web site with Yahoo and get a $25 credit when you sign up.
